May 30, Alexander Archipenko is born in Kiev, Ukraine as the son of Porfiry Antonowitsch and Poroskowia Wassiliewna Machowa Archipenko. He has an older brother, Eugene.


Studies painting and sculpture at the Kiev art school.


Moves to Moscow where he exhibits in group shows.


Arrives in Paris. Studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, which he leaves after two weeks because it feels very academic to him. Studies independently at the Louvre and other Parisian Museums.

Establishes studio at Montparnasse. Meets Modigliani, Léger, Apollinaire, Cendrars, Gaudier-Brzeska, and Raynal at the artists’ colony La Ruche.

Creates Black Torso.
